Benefits of Composite Decking Vs. Wood Decking

When choosing materials for a new deck, many homeowners weigh the benefits of composite decking against traditional wood decking. Both options have their advantages, but composite decking is becoming increasingly popular for several reasons. Unlike wood, which requires regular maintenance to prevent warping, rotting, and splintering, composite decking is made from a blend of wood fibers and plastic, making it a durable and low-maintenance alternative. In areas like Fargo, where extreme weather conditions can take a toll on outdoor structures, composite decking can offer long-lasting performance without the need for constant upkeep.

Here are some key benefits of composite decking compared to wood decking:

  • Low maintenance: Composite decking doesn’t require staining, sealing, or painting, reducing the amount of time and effort needed for upkeep.
  • Weather resistance: Composite materials are resistant to moisture, mold, and mildew, making them ideal for areas with harsh weather conditions like Fargo.
  • Durability: Composite boards are less likely to warp, crack, or splinter, providing a safer and longer-lasting surface.
  • Eco-friendly: Many composite decking products are made from recycled materials, reducing environmental impact.
  • Variety of styles: Composite decking comes in a wide range of colors and textures, allowing for greater design flexibility.

While wood decking offers a natural aesthetic and may be less expensive upfront, composite decking provides a long-term, low-maintenance solution that can withstand the elements. This makes it a strong option for homeowners looking to enjoy their outdoor space without the hassle of frequent repairs and maintenance.

Do I Need to Replace My Deck?

Regular inspections and maintenance can help extend the life of your deck, but sometimes a replacement is the best course of action for your peace of mind and the safety of your family and guests. It makes more sense to replace your deck instead of paying for repairs when the cost of repairs approaches or exceeds the price of a new deck. This situation is particularly true if the deck's foundation or supporting structures are compromised, posing significant safety risks. Additionally, if your deck is nearing the end of its expected lifespan and is showing widespread signs of wear such as rot, instability, or severe discoloration, investing in a new deck can offer a safer, more durable, and more aesthetically pleasing outdoor living space. If you are concerned about your deck, our professionals can inspect it and provide an honest recommendation on the best path forward.

Do not wait to schedule an inspection if your deck is experiencing any of the following problems:

  • Visible wood rot. Rot occurs when the wood begins to decay, leading to a spongy texture, discoloration, and an overall weakened structure. This can compromise the safety of the deck, making it hazardous to use.
  • Unstable railings. The railings of your deck are crucial safety features. If railings begin to wobble or detach from the deck itself, your deck may be suffering structural issues. This instability can stem from weakened support posts or deterioration where the railing connects to the deck surface.
  • Loose or missing fasteners. Fasteners like nails, screws, and bolts are what hold your deck together. Over time, these can become loose or go missing entirely due to weather exposure or wood movements. If you notice a significant number of fasteners missing or failing, it could be time for a deck overhaul.
  • Severe discoloration or fading. While some discoloration is typical due to exposure to the elements, extreme changes in the appearance of your deck's wood could indicate deeper problems. Excessive fading might mean the wood is too dry, which can make it brittle and more susceptible to cracking and splintering.
  • Cracks large enough to see through. Small cracks in your deck's wood are normal, but when you start to notice cracks big enough to see through – or if they run deep into the wood – it's a serious sign of aging that signals an immediate need to request our Fargo deck services. Large cracks can weaken the overall integrity of your deck, making it unsafe for use.
  • Sinking or uneven sections. If sections of your deck are sinking or if the surface has become uneven, your footings or support posts are likely failing. This can happen due to shifting ground, water damage, or natural settling over time. An uneven deck is not only unsightly but can also pose a tripping hazard.

How Long Do Decks Last?

The lifespan of a deck varies widely depending on several factors, including the type of material used, the quality of construction, and how well it is maintained. Traditionally, decks made from pressure-treated wood have an expected lifespan of 10 to 15 years, although with diligent maintenance, they can last up to 20 years. Hardwoods, known for their durability and resistance to rot, can extend the life of a deck up to 25 years or more. However, they require regular maintenance, including sealing and staining to preserve their condition.

Composite decks, made from a blend of wood fibers and plastic, have surged in popularity due to their low maintenance needs and longevity. These decks can last up to 25 years or more. Although composite decks require less maintenance than wood-based decks, they should still be cleaned regularly to keep them looking their best.

Regardless of material, the longevity of a deck also heavily depends on the environment it's exposed to. Decks that face harsh weather conditions, such as extreme temperatures, heavy snow, or significant rainfall, may have reduced lifespans due to increased wear and tear. Regular inspections and proper maintenance, such as cleaning, sealing, and prompt repairs, are crucial to extending your deck's life and ensuring it remains a safe and enjoyable extension of your home for as long as possible.

Benefits of Installing a New Deck

Installing a new deck is an investment in your home and quality of life. A new deck can transform your outdoor living space, making it more functional and enjoyable. It can also potentially increase the value of your property.

Advantages of installing a new deck include:

  • Increased property value. One of the most significant benefits of adding a new deck is the potential increase in your property's value. Decks are a sought-after feature for many homebuyers, and installing one can yield a high return on investment.
  • Enhanced outdoor living space. A deck provides additional space for entertaining, relaxing, and enjoying the outdoors. Whether you're hosting a barbecue, lounging on a summer evening, or soaking up the sun, a deck serves as an extension of your home's living space, allowing you to make the most of your property.
  • Customization and aesthetic appeal. We can customize your new deck to suit your preferred style and unique needs, incorporating features such as built-in seating, planters, lighting, and more. The wide range of colors and finishes available means you can design a deck that not only complements your home but also reflects your personal taste.
  • Improved functionality and accessibility. A well-designed deck can significantly improve the functionality of your outdoor space. For example, a new deck can make use of unused or uneven outdoor spaces, transforming them into practical, usable areas.
  • Durability and low maintenance. Modern composite decking materials are designed for longevity and require minimal maintenance compared to traditional wood decks. Composite materials resist fading, splintering, and insect damage, ensuring your deck remains beautiful and functional for many years. Opting for these materials can save you time and money in maintenance over the life of the deck.
  • Lifestyle and health benefits. Spending time outdoors on your deck can have several lifestyle and health benefits, including increased vitamin D exposure, reduced stress levels, and improved mental well-being.
